Akira Hoshino has over 30 years of experience in global markets and trading.

He will lead Citi’s market business in Japan, focusing on expansion.

Hoshino will report directly to Paul Smith and Robert Nakamura.

Akira Hoshino's extensive experience in global markets makes him well-suited to lead Citi’s growth in Japan. Since joining the company in 2019, he has served as head of foreign exchange (FX) business and was later promoted to head of rates sales in 2022. At Citi, he has been recognised for driving business growth and developing strategic initiatives.

Before Citi, Hoshino held a key leadership role at MUFG Bank, directing global markets trading and sales. His experience extends to global financial institutions, having served as chair of the Tokyo Foreign Exchange Market Committee from 2009 to 2019 and vice-chair of the Global Foreign Exchange Committee from 2017 to 2020. These roles have further established him as a prominent figure in global finance.

Robert Nakamura, Citi country officer and banking head for Japan, underscored the strategic significance of Hoshino's appointment amid growing global investor interest in Japan. As leading Japanese companies expand internationally, the demand for sophisticated financial services is increasing. Citi aims to meet this demand by offering end-to-end financial solutions and superior service.

Paul Smith, Citi’s head of markets for Japan, Asia North and Australia, commended Hoshino’s leadership and industry knowledge. Smith remarked that Hoshino’s experience in the Japanese markets will enhance Citi’s offerings and reinforce the bank’s position as a key player in the region.
